Yes, one day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather wait at the doorway of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord is a sun and shield. God gives grace and glory. The Lord does not withhold any good thing from those who walk with integrity.
Psalm 84:10-11 (EHV)
What would you choose? One day in God’s house or a thousand days at Disneyland. One day in God’s house or a thousand days seeing the most beautiful sights in America. One day in God’s house or a thousand days visiting the wonders of the world. One day in God’s house or a thousand days exploring the universe. One day in God’s house or…
There are a lot of places we would like to see. There are a lot of things we would like to do. Yet the Psalm writer helps us keep it all in perspective: “Yes, one day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.” There are many wonderful, beautiful things in this world—things created by God and untouched by human hands, and things fashioned by human hands from the things God created. We could spend a lifetime seeking them, finding them, enjoying them. But there is still this perspective: None of them is better than spending time with God himself!
The devil, the sinful world, and our own sinful flesh want to convince us otherwise. They tell us we will be happy (blessed) if we go where God has told us not to go, if we do what we know we should not do, if we satisfy our sinful desire, if we indulge our sinful urges, if we lose this silly concern about what others (including God) think, if we stop stressing about how our life impacts others (including our relationship with God)—then we will be happy.
But the Psalmist says, “I would rather wait at the doorway of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” Why?
The Lord God is a sun; he provides light, warmth and life for us physcially and more importantly spiritually. The Lord God is a shield; he protects us and keeps us safe. He bestows his favor and honor on us. He lifts us up from the depths of despair. He assures us of forgiveness through the blood of his Son, Jesus. He makes us his children and guarantees an eternal inheritance kept for us in heaven. He calls us into his service and gives us important work to do. In the good times, in the challenging times, at all times—he embraces us with his love. No good thing does he withhold from the one who walks with him. The one who trusts in him is blessed. Truly, eternally blessed!
Enjoy all of God’s blessings, but realize that there is nothing better than spending time with our gracious God.
