He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, so that we would be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 1:4-5 — EHV)
Almost every sports league gives out rewards at the end of the season (and sometimes, at the end of big games). For instance, in June James Harden won the award of the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP); and tomorrow night after the MLB All-Star Game, someone will be awarded as the MVP of that game. You might disagree with a certain decision, and could make an argument that someone else should have won the honor, but the players who win such awards win them for a reason: they hey had a good game, a great season, the leader of one of the best teams, and so on—in other words, they earned it. And so they were chosen to win the award.
In the opening words of the passage above Paul writes that God chose us. What did God chose us for? He chose us to be holy and blameless in his sight. Of course, we are not holy and blameless on our own—we are nothing but horrible people and wicked sinners. Rather it is only through Christ, who washes away our sins and covers them in his own blood, that we are considered holy and blameless. Notice that Paul says that we are holy and blameless in his sight, because we are not holy and blameless by ourselves but when God looks at us he sees the perfect life of Christ credited to us so he considers us holy and blameless on account of his Son!
It is through faith in Christ that we are considered holy and blameless for faith receives and holds on to the blessings that Christ won for us. That is why Paul says that he predestined, or decided before hand, to adopt us as his sons (sons, since they received an inheritance from their fathers at this time, while daughters received an inheritance through their husbands). So God chose to adopt us as his own dear children who will receive an inheritance of eternal salvation.
Why did God choose us? Notice what Paul says in the beginning of the passage above, He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. Before the world was ever created God chose you to be saved through faith in Jesus Christ. That means before you were born, before you ever did anything good or bad, before you were brought to faith through the gospel, God chose you. So why did God choose you? Only out of love, only by a gift of his grace! He didn’t chose you because of who were are, what you would do, or even because he knew that you would believe! You did nothing to be chosen, God simply chose you because he chose you out of love. And because God chose you, you can rest assured that he will give you (and all his children) an eternal inheritance. That is the grace and love of our God!
