Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. (John 6:68 - EHV)
Nowadays if you are in need of something you often seek an expert. If you have a medical condition you aren’t simply going to see a general practitioner, you are going to see an expert in the area in which you need treatment—an oncologist for cancer treatments, an orthopedic surgeon if you tore a knee ligament, or a cardiologist if you have a heart issue. If you have some questions about finances you are going to visit a financial planner. Vehicles are getting more and more complicated and sophisticated so you can only do a few basic repairs; for everything else, it seems, as if you have to take it to a mechanic.
It seems as if in this day and age there is an expert in anything. Some really do know what they are talking about, they are studied in their particular area of expertise and have a good amount of experience as well. Others simply call themselves experts even though they have no clue what they are talking about; such people do more harm than good.
There are many so-called religious experts out in the world today. They don’t all agree, of course, in fact, many of them teach things that are directly contrary to each other. So who are we to follow—with so many experts out there teaching so many things, who are we to listen to?
The one who teaches according to God’s Word, and thus the one who points us to Jesus Christ and him crucified. It’s as simple as that. For when it comes down to it, there is only one way to heaven and there are multiple ways that lead to eternal death. Jesus says in Matthew 7, Enter through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter through it. How narrow is the gate, and how difficult is the way that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Jesus is the only way to eternal life and Jesus alone has the words of eternal life. For in his Word alone do we learn about how Christ is and about his perfect life, suffering and death, and his resurrection. In his Word alone do we see him as our Savior. And the Lord works through his Word to bring us to faith and keep us in that one true faith so that we receive all the blessings, including eternal life, that Christ won for us.
The Lord, then, remains the world’s foremost religious expert, the world’s foremost authority when it comes to eternal life—a free gift given to you by his grace through faith in him. And what’s great about this expert is that you don’t have to set-up an appointment to see him and you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to hear what he has to say. Everything he wants us to know, everything we need to know is already written down for us and accessible to us whenever we want it. Why go anywhere else—turn to the Lord by turning to his Word, not just on Sundays, but being in his Word every day, for they are the Words of eternal life.
