Be Careful How You Build Your Spiritual House

“In keeping with the grace of God given to me, as a wise master builder, I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. But let each person be careful how he builds on it.  In fact, no one can lay any other foundation than the one that has been laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  (1 Corinthians 3:10-11)

“And he huffed, and he puffed…and he blew the house down!” Remember that story? It was convenient. It didn’t cost too much or demand long, hard work. So, the first two little pigs hastily built houses with weak materials. The Big Bad Wolf easily blew them down. The third little pig was different. He used the better, more costly materials. He expended appropriate time and energy to build a strong house. “And he huffed, and he puffed…but he could not blow that house down!”

“Be careful how you build!” That is advice from a messenger of Jesus named Paul. It was first written some 2,000 years ago, but that advice is meant for us today too. It is true that careful construction and quality materials will provide comfort, peace of mind and a good return on investment when it comes to our physical dwellings. But we don’t need the Bible to understand that. Paul had something different in mind when he wrote these words. Be careful how you build…your spiritual houses!

Where does one even start when trying to follow Paul’s advice?  There are so many convenient and compelling options. There are so many building materials and blueprints. Let’s start where he did. The expert builder Paul laid a solid foundation–the good news message of Jesus Christ. Jesus laid down his life as payment for the sins of the whole world and rose from the dead in victory! Paul and others continued to build on that firm foundation by speaking and teaching the words and promises of Jesus. Those words don’t always make sense to us, and they don’t promise a life of ease and success. But they do give great comfort when we struggle with the guilt of sin.  They do give us peace of mind when confronting the reality of death.

Simply put, God wants us to carefully build our spiritual houses on Jesus and our houses will last!  But how can we build our spiritual houses on the right foundation.  Starting Sunday September 11, here at St. John we will be celebrating “Christian Education” Sunday.  On this Sunday, we will be reminded of what it means to build our spiritual houses on Jesus.  Here are a few of the ways that we at St. John can build on the foundation of Jesus and his Word.

  • Sunday School – Sunday mornings from 9:15 – 10:15, all the children of St. John ages 3 – 6th Grade can attend Sunday School to learn what the Bible tells us about Jesus and the forgiveness of our sins.  This year, we especially are encouraging even those children who are attending one of our Lutheran Elementary Schools to attend Sunday School.  We are using a new Curriculum which will not overlap with the Christlight series that is being used in our Lutheran Elementary Schools.  Please come and join us.
  • Teen Bible Class – Sunday mornings from 9:15 – 10:15, all the teens of St. John from Grades 7-12 can attend Teen Bible Class.  Pastor Gartner will be leading the first classes.  Our goal is to grow together through God’s Word and assist the young people at St. John as they seek to grow in their faith and to live their faith.  Please come and invite a friend or two and join us as we find out how God’s Word has all the answers we will ever need.  We will meet in the room in the Church basement.

Our first theme is entitled, “What about . . . ? Here are some of the questions that God will help us answer

-  Homosexuality

-  Abortion

-  Euthanasia

-  Temptations

-  Evolution

  • Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class – Sunday mornings from 9:15 – 10:15, all the adults of St. John are invited to join us for Bible Study.  What a great place for parents to be while their children are in Sunday School and Teen Bible Class.  The whole family can be in God’s Word at the same time.  Pastor Schoell will be leading a Bible Study entitled, How Can They Teach That? (And Still Claim to Believe the Bible)  This is a study about why many churches have adopted positions on topics that go against what Scripture clearly says. It shows how human reason has distorted God’s clear Word.  We’ll also learn to appreciate the blessings we have in our Wisconsin Synod and its approach to Scripture.
  • Monday/Tuesday Bible Class – Our Monday morning Bible classes will resume Monday, Sept. 12th at 8:00 am. Tuesday evening Bible classes will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 13th at 5:30 pm.  We will be doing an overview Bible Study of the books of the Bible from Romans - Colossians.”  Our goal is to better acquaint ourselves with the major highpoints of each of these books which will help us to better understand God and his plan of Salvation.

So let’s get back to the basics this year as we seek to build our spiritual houses on the foundation of Jesus as it is found in God’s Word.  God’s blessings to you as you do this building.  Hope to see you all here – from the youngest to the oldest!
