The Life of a Successful Christian

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the advice of the wicked, who does not stand on the path with sinners, and who does not sit in a meeting with mockers.  But his delight is in the teaching of the Lord, and on his teaching he meditates day and night.  He is like a tree planted beside streams of water, which yields its fruit in season, and its leaves do not wither.  Everything he does prospers. – Psalm 1:1-3

What does it mean to be successful? Does it hinge on the number of achievements we can stockpile in life? On the amount of friends we gain? On the size of our bank accounts? The world around us may very well shout, “Yes! Those are exactly the things we should use to measure success!” (And we hear those shouts loudly and clearly, don’t we?)

But God’s definition of success is vastly different, and in his mercy God does not leave us to guess at what his definition is. In these first three verses of Psalm 1, the Lord lays out three characteristics that help define what the life of a “successful” Christian will look like:

Characteristic #1

“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the advice of the wicked, who does not stand on the path with sinners, and who does not sit in a meeting with mockers. The first characteristic of a “successful” Christian has to do with our attitude towards sin. The Lord wants us to realize that whatever shapes our thinking will also show in our actions. He wants his holy will for our lives, as he reveals it in his Word, to be what guides us, rather than the advice and values of those who oppose Christ.

Characteristic #2

“But his delight is in the teaching of the Lord, and on his teaching he meditates day and night. The second characteristic of a “successful” Christian has to do with our attitude towards “the teaching of the Lord” – which is the Bible. The Lord wants us to make meditating on it, thinking it through carefully, and reflecting on it a top priority in our lives. For in his Word is where we find guidance for how he wants us to live. It’s where we see the forgiveness we have in Christ for every time we fail in our lives of Christian living. And it’s where we receive the Christ-centered motivation to set our hearts on the Lord’s will once again.

Characteristic #3

“He is like a tree planted beside streams of water, which yields its fruit in season, and its leaves do not wither.” The third characteristic of a “successful” Christian has to do with our attitude towards others. The Psalmist says that those who regularly fill up on God’s Word are like trees planted by streams of water. That is, they are healthy trees, trees that produce fruit from which others benefit. The Lord wants our Christian lives to do the same. Christ’s love for us moves us to love others, and his service to us moves us to serve others.

The Lord makes a great promise to those who set their hearts on living this way: “Everything he does prospers.” This means the Lord will guard us from dangers that threaten our soul. We will be regularly renewed and strengthened through the Word of Christ, and we will live to serve and benefit others.

Now that’s success!

LWMS Fall Rally

The Wolf River Circuit is planning to have its fall rally on Saturday, October 8th here at St. John. We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Wolf River Circuit.  All ladies of the congregation are members of LWMS and are invited to attend. Sign up if you plan to attend and stay for lunch. Be sure to sign up if you are helping and plan to stay for lunch at noon; a sign-up sheet is in the entryway.  Our guest speaker is Pastor Ben Enstad.  The theme is “Jesus is The Light of the World” (John 8:12).

Sunday Morning Family Bible Time

  • Sunday School

Sunday School has begun. Please bring your children (3K-6th Grades).  This year we will be using new materials to help accommodate our children who are attending Christian Day Schools.  The Lessons in Sunday School will be a different series than what the Day School students are receiving in school each week.  What an opportunity for your children (both those in Public School and those in Christian Day Schools) to hear the Word of God and to learn about God’s love for us that is shown to us in Jesus.

  •  Sunday Morning Bible Class

Pastor Schoell is leading a Bible Study entitled, “How Can They Teach That? (And Still Claim to Believe the Bible)”, a study about why many churches have adopted positions on topics that go against what Scripture clearly says. It shows how human reason distorts God’s clear Word.

  •  Teen Bible Class

We also have our (new) class for all teens from 7th Grade – 12th Grade.  Pastor Gartner is leading the first classes.  Our goal is to grow together through God’s Word and assist the young people at St. John as they seek to grow in their faith and to live their faith.  Please come and invite a friend or two and join us as we find out how God’s Word has all the answers we will ever need.  We meet in the room in the Church basement.  Even if you missed the first couple of weeks, we'd still love to have you join us.

Monday/Tuesday Bible Class

Our Monday morning Bible classes have resumed on Mondays at 8:00 am & Tuesdays at 5:30 pm.  Pastor Gartner is doing an overview Bible Study of the books of the Bible from “Romans - Colossians.” Our goal is to better acquaint ourselves with the major highpoints of each of these books which will help us to better understand God and his plan of Salvation.
