Go Big or Go Home!

"He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, but not only ours, but also for the whole world."
 (1 John 2:2 - EHV)

“Go big or go home.” That motto reflects a character that we tend to admire in people. This character says that doing just enough to get by isn’t good enough. These types of individuals are not satisfied unless they give everything they have and do something spectacular.

Athletes will do this as they give their all and leave everything on the field. Architects who follow this motto are going to design a building that really “wows” people. Students with this character are committed to going over the top on their project instead of putting in the minimal amount of work to just get by.

“Go big or go home,” could be a motto that fits our God. It wasn’t enough for God to put together a plan through Jesus to save a chosen few people (Israel) from the damning results of their sin. His plan was to bring salvation to everyone no matter where they live or what kind of ethnic blood flows through their veins and no matter how many sins they have committed.

Last weekend, we celebrated Epiphany which is the beautiful reminder that God sent Jesus to be the Savior of all people. He certainly carried out this plan in a “go big or go home” kind of a way. He didn’t just carry some sins to the cross. He carried every sin of every person who has ever and will ever live in this world. To say that he gave his all would be an understatement. He gave himself. He gave up his perfect and innocent life because that was the only price big enough to pay the debt owed by sinners like us.

The God whom we sin against every day was not content to make salvation available to just a few people with Jewish heritage. His love for us refused to let him exclude us from that group. It doesn’t matter where we live, what language we speak, what color our skin is, or what nationality we claim as our own. God sent Jesus to save us all, as John reminds us, “He (Jesus) is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, but not only ours, but also for the whole world." Our sins were carried to the cross and their punishment was suffered by the Son of God. Our debt has been paid. Salvation is ours.

Bible Classes

On Sunday mornings, Pastor Gartner is leading a study on the practice of Stewardship—how God wants us to use all the gifts that he has graciously given to us—whether it’s the use of our time, our talents, our treasures, our bodies, his great creation, etc. Plan on joining us for this study on Sunday mornings at 9:15am.

On Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings Pastor Frey is studying the letters of John the Apostle. In his first letter John expertly weaves doctrine with practice—a practical letter filled with passages on the love and mercy of Christ. Please plan on joining us as we study these interesting letters to God’s people.

NOTE: We do have audio recordings and the Lesson Sheets of these Bible Classes. If you have been unable to attend and would like these sent to you, please email Pastor Frey or Pastor Gartner.

School of Outreach

Saturday, February 8, a School of Outreach will be hosted at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schofield, WI. A School of Outreach is a one day WELS workshop to assist churches with putting together a plan on how to reach out with the Gospel in their communities. Since we just established a Board of Evangelism here at St. John, we have decided it would be a good start for us to attend this School of Outreach. We would like to invite anyone from St. John to join us in attending this workshop. If you are interested in reaching out to the lost with the Gospel or want to learn more about Evangelism and Outreach, please sign up on the signup sheet and plan to join us on February 8. If you have any questions, please talk to one of the Pastors or to Andy Pevonka, our new Evangelism Chairman.

We are here to serve you! Please reach out to us and we'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.
